Tradition beats any trend

Enduro in Winterberg

Last year, the enduro race in Winterberg was held as an individual event without being part of a series. The race was a great success and so the discipline will again be part of the festival with a few new sections and minor developments.

The iXS Dirt Masters Festival has a long tradition of hosting enduro races. Back in 2012, when the format had just arrived in Germany, the forests around Winterberg were the venue for a top-class race. At that time, the discipline really still had to be developed and, looking back, one can say that Winterberg also played its part. So now, ten years later, the story is being continued and, as part of the iXS Dirt Masters Festival, various special stages will once again be set up in the area around the bike park.

It all starts on Saturday with the official practice, before things get serious for the first time in the late afternoon with the prologue. As always, the prologue will be used not only for the first time in the cumulative classification, but also for the starting order on Sunday, so there will certainly be a lot of gas on tap. Speaking of the gas tap; for all those who will be riding in the e-bike class, there is already a special stage to be completed at 2 pm, which will also be added to the result as additional time.

And because the festival has long wanted to offer something to the youngest cycling enthusiasts as well, the Kids Enduro Race has been held on Saturday for several years. More and more such offers can be found in the programme plans of the big events, such as for the first time at the BIKE Festival in Riva.

After a guided training tour starts at ten o'clock for the young athletes, they will then have time for individual training. After that, their race will start at 3 pm. The track will of course be adapted to the requirements, so that the competition will only take place on a shortened lap with two special stages.

On Sunday, things really get going. At 9.30 am, the first riders are sent out on the lap. This time the start will be a little less secluded than in previous years, because the start/finish area has been moved directly to the new expo area, so that the enduro sport can now be given the attention it deserves. Another organisational note is allowed, because the start number distribution will now also take place in the organisation office in the start house of the bobsleigh run, in contrast to previous years. But now back to the race, because the technical details of the course will probably still be of interest. In addition to the prologue and the e-bike stage, six timed sections will be included in the results. In total, the participants will complete a lap of about 20 kilometres, with about 800 metres of altitude gain. As things stand at the moment, more than 300 endurists will be in Winterberg, giving the rather gravity-heavy festival a touch of endurance sport.
